Stephen Kleinhans, CEO and co-owner of Big 'D' Floor Covering Supplies, a new member of FCNews' Top 20 Flooring Distributors list, has a simple business goal: leverage your strengths. "Big 'D' success is about recognizing and focusing on what we're good at," Kleinhans told FCNews. If you look at the top distributors, they all focus on their strengths and don't try to be what they are not.
Big 'D' project sales for 2018 will be in the range of $110 million, compared to $98 million in 2017. Big 'D' has a strong focus on installation-related products (including tools, powders and adhesives), although LVT/WPC is its fastest growing category, followed by ceramics. Some of its main suppliers include: Johnsonite (and its family of commercial products), Tarkett, Mapei, Schluter, Uzin and RB Rubber Floors. In fact, Big 'D' has been Mapei's largest distributor for three of the last five years. Kleinhans, who first joined the company in 1983 to oversee operations, said more than 85% of his sales came from actual installation products.
