How To Lay Vinyl Black And White Flooring (In Stripes!)
To top off our mini kitchen makeover (check out how we painted the cabinets and added hardware, we knew we had to do something about the floor. Since we're saving our pennies for a major kitchen makeover (this won't happen probably not for at least a year or so) we knew we wanted something very cheap and easy to install Ok, obviously this isn't the most glamorous flooring option, but it can add a pop of color or a fun pattern to any room.the different options - we saw tons of earthy/grey/beige colors that looked relatively nice, but I didn't like the idea of using anything thing that was *trying* to look like ceramic tile and clearly wasn't (when I saw the crisp white and black options at our local Rona, I was sold.):–Achim Home Furnishings FTVSO10120 12-inch Nexus Vinyl Tile, Solid Black, 20-Pack

We grabbed about 50 tiles (25 white and 25 black) and were able to peel and stick. You can use a primer on your floors to make sure they're really glued down, but since that's a temporary fix for us, we weren't too worried. Originally I had thought of the tried and true checkered pattern, but when I laid it down it looked a little too much like a dinner party. Seriously, even if you've never done anything practical before, you won't have a problem with these. You may need to do a bit of trimming to fit in particular places (like around the perimeter of the room), but with a good quality utility knife it's pretty cinchy. You want to dry lay your tiles so you can visualize what the pattern will look like and make sure things are centered correctly, then start laying. As you can see from my over-enthusiastic smile in the third photo, it's actually quite satisfying to stick these tiles. And here they are in all their brilliant glory…
You can see the edges between the tiles a bit, especially in the whites, but it's not crazy noticeable. It's brighter and just more fun. This whole “mini makeover” was super reasonable:
Cabinet painting: $0 (paint and supplies already owned)
Addition of hardware: $150 (but remember, we will be using this hardware in our future kitchen renovation)
Re-tiling the floor: $45
Grand total: $195.
